"OFF THE WALL"
Vans was founded in 1966 in Cypress, California by brothers Paul and James van Doren, although they initially called the company the Van Doren Rubber Company. The first Vans model was the #44 Deck Shoe, a sturdy canvas shoe with a grippy rubber waffle-sole, that we know today as the Vans Authentic. Because of its durable construction and high quality, the Authentic (still one of the best-selling skate shoes) soon became the shoe of choice for skaters all over California. In 1975, Vans decided to capitalise on its enormous popularity among skaters with the now iconic "Off the wall" line. The name Off the wall comes from skaters who started riding the walls of dry pools. The first model in the Off the Wall line was the Era, quickly followed by the Chukka Low. Designed by pro skaters Stacy Peralta and Tony Alva, these shoes with extra padding to protect skaters' feet and ankles are now considered the first skate shoes in history. Besides these successful skate shoes, Vans became known for another iconic model: the Vans Slip-On. This simple shoe became a permanent part of the uniform of various youth cultures. Despite a small dip in the 80s, Vans is still one of the biggest brands in the skate scene. As the first company of its kind, it's hard to ignore Vans. Originality, style and quality are still the things Vans is all about. Besides an extensive line of skate shoes (also very popular among non-skaters), Vans has a contemporary clothing collection that consists of jumpers, T-shirts, jackets and shorts. Vans has always given a lot back to the skate world. In addition to sponsoring talented riders, Vans organised legendary constests and tours like the Vans Triple Crown Series and the Vans Warped Tour. In 2015 a new chapter will be added to the rich Vans history. That's when the first Vans skate video ever will be released: Propeller.
Vans Half Cab
Of all the iconic Vans skate shoes (including the Old Skool, Era and Sk8 Hi), the Vans Half Cab is perhaps the most iconic. The story behind this shoe is too good not to tell. In 1989, skateboard legends received the first signature shoe in skateboard history: the Cab. This high top with dragon logo was a huge success, but Steve noticed that many street skaters were cutting the shoes straight from the box; to get more freedom of movement, they cut the high tops halfway. Steve tried it himself, and liked it so much that he suggested to Vans to release a lower version of the Cab. In 1991, Vans released a mid-top version of Steve's shoe, with the Caballero logo replaced with the words Half Cab and a picture of Steve Caballero doing his signature trick the half cab. The Vans Half Cab has been around for almost 25 years, but it's still one of the favourite skate shoes of the Revert 95 crew and many of our customers!
