Founded in 2006 by Californian Angel Cabada, Supra has quickly become one of the leading brands in skate shoes and trainers. In a market flooded with black and white, nondescript, thirteen-in-a-dozen trainers, Supra set itself apart with skate shoes and trainers that are as flashy as they are original. Supra introduced bright colours, gold, silver and eye-catching details into the street scene and with the Skytop has patented the superlative of high-tops. Many skate shoe and trainer brands try to follow or imitate Supra, but Supra always manages to stay one step ahead of the competition thanks to its grassroots approach and unerring sense of style.
Supra history
Angel Cabada was born in Orange County, California. He got into skateboarding at an early age, and it proved to be a crucial influence on the rest of his life. Jobs in fast-food chains and car dealerships didn't appeal to him, so he decided to start making clothes with his friends. He learned by doing, and in 1991, together with a partner, he founded clothing brand TSA (Team Santa Ana). After 10 years, he decided it was time to take the next step and started his own business; in 2002 he founded a new clothing brand, called Kr3w. His time with TSA proved to be a good learning experience; the rookie mistakes he had made with this brand would not happen to him with Kr3W. Kr3w introduced skinny jeans to the skate scene and the brand quickly became a ridiculous success. To complement the clothing line, Angel also wanted to start a Kr3w shoe line around 2005, but he realised this would create a conflict with his business partners. Having already spent $100,000 on samples for Kr3w Footwear, he changed his plan and started Supra Footwear in 2006. Supra is Latin for "above" and "beyond", but Angel also thought it sounded cool. His idea with Supra was to design shoes that would match the clothes he was making and be a little less clunky than the shoes that were so en vogue at the time. At first, people laughed at Supra's first shoe, the Skytop, but the shoe became such a success that it is a typical case of "he who laughs last, laughs best".
Supra for and by skateboarders
From day one, Supra has been a real skate brand. The fact that Supra trainers The fact that the shoes are now hugely popular among non-skaters has not changed. Before the brand even got off the ground, well-known and influential skaters got involved and had their say on the style and construction of the skate shoes. Supra has released successful signature shoes by Tom Penny, Erik Ellington, Jim Greco and Stevie Williams, plus well-known skate models such as the Vaider and Stacks. But it all started with the aforementioned Skytop by Chad Muska. This iconic high-top, which Muska developed in collaboration with Supra designer Josh Brubaker, changed the look of skate shoes forever. Muska: "We wanted something different than the traditional blunt-fronted skate shoes. The Skytop marked the end of an era." And the beginning of a new era. Supra, according to Muska, was an "underground idea" that "exploded insanely". Muska's teammate Erik Ellington says he finds it amazing that the brand has become so bizarrely successful when it could just as easily have gone the other way. But we don't think it's that surprising. Supra has a sixth sense for picking up trends, but always stays true to its own style.
