In Haarlem, people have been fanatically skating for years. A large group of young people can be found every week on squares and in car parks practising the sickest tricks. The group of skaters is very diverse; they are young people of different ages, genders and cultures. However, they have one common problem: the weather... When it rains, blows or is dark, they cannot skate. Unfortunately, there is no indoor skating facility in Haarlem.
For three years, Thomas Adamidis, himself a fanatic skater, has been pushing for an indoor skate park. For the realisation of a skate park, he has collected more than 3000 signatures and presented them to the Haarlem city council. Through this citizen initiative, the council members realised that a skate park was needed in Haarlem. The municipality became so enthusiastic that they donated a large sum of money to Thomas to build the park on the Mincklersweg in Haarlem.
Foundation Skatepark Haarlem
Thomas' initiative made other skaters enthusiastic as well. They have united in the Foundation Skatepark Haarlem with the aim to realise an indoor skate park. In this foundation are members (who are we) with different backgrounds such as entrepreneurs, technicians, teachers and builders. Meanwhile, the group has ensured that there are more opportunities for skaters in Haarlem to skate. For example, they give skate lessons and in cooperation with the local skate shop Revert 95, they organise events. They have also managed to reach out to their supporters, which has resulted in a large list of volunteers willing to work for the skate park.
The skate park
The Haarlem Skatepark Foundation has ensured that a hall will be built with limited resources. Recently (picture newspaper) the foundation of the park has been poured. The park will be situated at a unique spot in Haarlem, namely at the Mincklersweg in the Waardepolder. This part of Haarlem is easy to reach and is a breeding ground for creative enterprises. The municipality is renting the land of the park to the foundation and they are confident that the foundation will be able to exploit the park successfully.
Costs
So we have one problem; money is needed to build the obstacles in the park. The best skaters from Haarlem have designed the obstacles for the park so that every skater can practise his or her fattest tricks. These obstacles are made of wood and metal and therefore cost a lot of money. We have calculated that with a sum of at least € 25,000, we can build most of the obstacles.
