Their canvas shoes with their signature waffle sole were quickly adopted by skateboarders throughout California for their durability and superior grip. In 1975, Vans released the first true skateboarding shoe ever: the Vans Era. These deck shoes with extra padding were designed by pro skaters Stacy Peralta and Tony Alva. Vans shoes remained popular among skateboarders in the years that followed, as the brand listened to their needs. For example, in the early 1990s, Steve Caballero noticed a new generation of street skaters cutting his high-top pro model halfway off. He suggested releasing a mid-top version of the shoe, and the revolutionary Vans Half Cab was born. Among the many iconic models Vans has released over the years are well-known names such as the Vans Slip On, Vans Chukka, Vans Sk8 Hi, and the Vans Old Skool. The shoes that Vans originally started with are still being made and are now sold under the name Vans Authentic. Vans also produces innovative skate shoes like the TNT and the Rowley.
